Khao soi or khao soy is a Burmese-influenced dish served widely in northern Laos and northern Thailand.
When in northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai you eat khao soi.
You eat it everyday, twice, maybe even 3 times a day.
Because it’s just that good!
You’ll find it being sold literally everywhere and costs as little as 40 baht.
Khao soi is essentially a spicy curry style noodle soup, with a mix of soft-boiled egg noodles and crispy fried egg noodles. The soupy broth is similar to that of a Massaman curry. Yummy.
In my opinion the spicier the better, and the dishes served with a chicken leg, over diced chicken seem to be the best.
The picture above is our all time favourite.
So far anyway, we still have a few more days in Northern Thailand, a few more days means at least a few more!
The Best In Chiang Mai
Bought at our favourite place, Khao Soi Mae Sai. Located just to the north-west of old town Chiang Mai.
It’s a tiny little shop, down a little side street. The owners and staff are so lovely and friendly and the service is quick and Thai style. A khao soi will cost you 45 baht, with drinks at 10-15 baht each plus a free water/ice service.
Khao Soi Mae Sai is popular with both locals and travellers, and is just and all round great place to pop in for a quick spot of lunch.
We highly recommend a visit to this little hidden gem if you’re ever in Chiang Mai!
So there you go, our favourite Thai dish, you must try it!
Eat it all day everyday like we do.
